Lake Onalaska is a backwater off the Mississippi River, so whatever fish are in the river will be in Lake Onalaska. The lake is predominantly shallow with some dredged out areas that provide some depth. Lake Onalaska is a panfish mecca, that's why I go there, for crappies. I have done fair on LM Bass, but on the river, not in the lake. Bass fishing on the river, I concentrate on boat docks and lazy small little offshoots off the main river. There's one good pike lake adjacent to the river, but I cannot think of the name. I'm not much for catfishing, so I couldn't really give you any info for cats. I fished the bridge pylons of the interstate bridge on the Black river and have done well for walleyes. There is so much water to cover and so many options for fishig, I reccommend picking out small sections of river and working them, rather than trying to fish everywhere, there's too much water, lots of islands, hard to navigate. The LaCrosse area takes a few trips to figure out where to fish.
