Catchable Trout Flies

I want to get serious about using flies for the trout that are stocked locally in the spring and fall. I would appreciate any suggestions on patterns and sizes that work. Dry , wet, streamer, nymph, size(s)? Or just tell me the one fly you wouldn't be without. If they are not too exotic, I can tie my own.
